DIY filter cleaning vs. professional heat pump cleaning

Homeowners should clean filters. But there's a real difference between that and a professional deep clean.

What homeowners can usually clean

Most homeowners can safely clean the removable filters. Efficiency Nova Scotia recommends removing heat pump filters, rinsing them in warm water, and letting them dry completely before putting them back in place.

Homeowners can also gently wipe the outer cover and keep the area around the indoor and outdoor units clear of debris. These simple habits help the heat pump breathe.

What homeowners should not do

Do not spray water into the indoor unit. Do not use harsh chemicals. Do not take apart electrical components. Do not force plastic tabs or louvers. Do not pressure wash the indoor head.

Manufacturer safety guidance is strict for good reason. Improper cleaning inside a heat pump can cause electric shock, fire, water leakage, or damage to internal parts.

What professional cleaning adds

Professional heat pump cleaning goes beyond the filter screen. A deep clean can address indoor coil buildup, blower wheel dust, drain pan residue, clogged drain channels, interior casing grime, odours from hidden surfaces, and airflow restrictions.

These areas are difficult to clean properly without the right tools, containment, and process.

Why filter cleaning alone may not fix airflow

If the filters are clean but airflow still feels weak, the issue may be deeper inside the unit. Dirt on the blower wheel can reduce the amount of air being pushed into the room. Dirt on the coil can make heat transfer less effective.

ENERGY STAR says dirty coils reduce a system's ability to cool, cause longer run times, and increase energy costs. Clean filters are necessary but not sufficient.

A simple maintenance rhythm that works

Check filters monthly. Clean filters every 1 to 3 months. Book professional cleaning once per year. Book sooner for musty smells, water leaks, visible black debris, pets, or heavy usage.

DIY and professional cleaning are not either-or. Your regular filter cleaning keeps the system breathing between appointments. Professional cleaning removes the deeper buildup that filter maintenance cannot reach.

Common questions

Is it safe to use a coil cleaner spray myself?
The chemical part is the smaller problem. The bigger issue is that you can't rinse the cleaner properly without removing the fan barrel. DIY cleaner residue attracts more dust than was there before.
How often should I clean filters between professional cleans?
Every 4 to 8 weeks during heavy use seasons. Quick rinse, let them fully dry, reinstall. More often if you have pets or high dust.
Will professional cleaning void my warranty?
No. Most manufacturers require professional maintenance to keep the warranty valid. DIY filter rinsing doesn't count toward warranty documentation.
