Heat Pump Cleaning

7 signs your heat pump needs a deep clean

Most heat pumps don't break suddenly. They warn you first. Here's what those warnings look like.

1. The heat pump smells musty

A musty smell is one of the biggest signs that the indoor unit needs attention. Heat pumps can collect dust and moisture inside the head, especially during cooling season. When that buildup sits inside the unit, odours come out every time the fan starts.

If the smell is strongest when the unit first turns on, the source may be inside the indoor head, coil, blower wheel, or drain area. A filter rinse may help a little, but it usually will not remove deeper buildup.

2. Airflow feels weak

If the heat pump is on but the air feels weak, the system may be restricted by dirty filters, a dirty coil, or a clogged blower wheel. Weak airflow can also make rooms heat or cool unevenly — one side of the room feels comfortable while another area stays cold or humid.

3. You see black dust or specks

Black specks around the vent, louvers, or wall below the unit are a strong reason to book a cleaning. This can be a sign that dust and organic buildup have collected inside the fan and are being pushed back into the room. A clean heat pump should not blow dirt into your living space.

4. The unit leaks water indoors

Water leaking from the indoor heat pump head can happen when the drain channel or drain line is restricted. During cooling mode, the unit removes moisture from indoor air, and that moisture needs to drain properly. If water is dripping inside, shut the unit off and book service.

5. Energy bills are climbing

Heat pumps are designed to move heat efficiently, but dirt makes that job harder. If the coil, filter, or blower components are dirty, the system may need to run longer to deliver the same comfort. If your usage habits have not changed but your bill has, cleaning should be part of the troubleshooting.

6. Allergy symptoms feel worse indoors

Your heat pump circulates indoor air. If the filters and internal surfaces are dirty, the unit may keep moving dust, pet dander, and other particles through the room. Cleaning is one of the simplest ways to reduce buildup inside a system you use every day.

7. It has been more than a year

Even if the unit seems fine, annual cleaning is a smart baseline for most homes. Heat pumps often get dirty slowly. By the time you notice a problem, buildup may already be affecting comfort and efficiency.

ENERGY STAR recommends annual pre-season checkups for HVAC systems, and Natural Resources Canada recommends qualified contractor maintenance to keep heat pumps in good working order.

Common questions

Can a heat pump smell musty without being dirty?
Rarely. A musty smell almost always points to organic buildup inside the coil, blower wheel, or drain area. Filter rinsing won't reach those surfaces.
Is black dust from a heat pump dangerous?
It can be. Black debris can include mould spores, dust, and particulate matter circulating through your living space. It's a sign the unit needs immediate professional cleaning.
How soon should I book after noticing these signs?
As soon as possible, especially if you're seeing water leaks or black debris. Most issues get worse the longer the unit runs dirty.
